Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
133 PM PST Fri Jan 17 2025

.SYNOPSIS...

* Dry conditions will prevail through next week.

* Temperatures will remain near average, but brief cooling with
gusty ridgetop winds is possible late Sunday and Monday.

* Longer range guidance brings a potentially colder weather
system into the region by the January 25-26 weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* The current dry pattern with a high pressure off the west coast
and a large scale trough over the eastern 2/3 of the US will
remain in place through early next week. This pattern will allow
a series of weak shortwaves to drop southward into the Great
Basin, with the first arriving tonight and the next arriving
late Sunday night/Monday. The main effects will be short periods
of cooling after today`s milder temperatures. Highs on Saturday
are projected to drop into the lower-mid 40s across much of the
region, and just below 40 degrees for northwest NV. After a 4-8
degree rebound Sunday, highs then dip to their coolest levels
of the week on Monday--mainly upper 30s-lower 40s. There remains
some uncertainty with Monday`s shortwave track, as about 30% of
the ensemble cluster guidance tracks this system farther east
across Utah, which would result in less of a cooldown for
eastern CA/western NV. Chilly nights will continue with the
coldest lows mainly in the single digits and teens for early
  morning Monday and Tuesday.

* In addition to the cooling, periods of increased winds will
accompany these shortwave passages, mainly for higher elevations
with NW-N ridge top gusts of 30-35 mph tonight-Saturday, then
shifting to the west Saturday night-Sunday AM. Winds begin to
edge upward from the NW later Sunday, then the most likely
period for stronger NE-E ridge gusts (45-60 mph) is projected
during the day Monday. But as previously mentioned--if this
second trough tracks farther east, these winds would be weaker.

* From next Tuesday through Friday, the ensemble guidance
continues to favor the offshore ridge moving inland over the
western US. This will keep storms out of CA/NV in this time
frame, although by late Friday the ridge has a greater potential
of becoming displaced due to an approaching low pressure trough.
A gradual warmup is expected with highs around 5 degrees above
average for lower elevations, and up to 10 degrees above average
in higher elevations by late next week. Light winds and the
closer proximity of the upper ridge will lead to valley
inversions and buildup of urban haze next week from Tuesday
  onward.

* For the January 25-26 weekend, there`s a little better ensemble
agreement with a colder weather system arriving to the region.
Current projections don`t indicate a heavy precip event, but
whatever falls is more likely to be snow even into lower
elevations. This would be the first opportunity in 2025 to get
some snow into the urban valleys of far western NV, where season
totals so far have generally been near or less than 1 inch. MJD

&&

.AVIATION...

* VFR conditions will prevail across the region through next week
with light surface winds and limited cloud cover. Valley
inversions will continue to support areas of urban haze and
slight reductions in slantwise visibility during
overnight/morning hours for most days in the upcoming week,
  mainly near KRNO.

* Mainly W-NW Sierra ridge wind gusts around 30 kt through this
weekend may produce occasional mountain wave turbulence. These
ridge winds then increase with potential for stronger NE-E gusts
up to 50 kt late Sunday night through Monday, leading to more
turbulent conditions especially near and west of the Sierra
  crest. MJD
